SERVING CHILDREN AGES 3+ FOR PLAY & INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

BRIANA JOSEPH, LCMHC

Briana (she/her) is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) in the state of North Carolina. She earned her Master of Science degree from the University of North Carolina Greensboro. Briana has served in the mental health field for over 6 years as an outpatient therapist. She has a strong passion for working with children and adolescents facing various challenges related to mental health and development and believes that children are highly capable, intelligent, and loving beings who deserve opportunities to grow and develop. Briana is especially interested in creating safe and sacred therapeutic spaces for people of color, as this is a population that is often underserved.

Briana has held various roles that have allowed her to work with children and adolescents, including a program manager for a youth mentoring program, a Guardian ad Litem court advocate, and a teacher assistant in a special needs classroom. She is excited to be part of the Birch Therapy team and looks forward to working with you and your loved ones!

MY WHY

During her keynote speech at the 2024 Annual Association for Play Therapy Conference, Terri Kottman challenged conference-goers to think about their “why” for working with children. My answer remains the same as it has always been: to provide culturally sensitive care for Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC). I strive to create spaces for black and brown people to express themselves in accepting and nonjudgmental spaces. Everyone deserves to have at least one person in their lives who delights in who they are as individuals, and I believe this is especially important for children and people of color. A quote by Frederick Douglass helps emphasize my passion in this field: "It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men."

My style

Briana takes an integrated approach, orienting her professional lens through the “one t-shirt won’t fit the entire family” quote. Person-centered therapy allows her to view each client as unique, valued, and worthy of unconditional acceptance; this is the foundation of her therapeutic work. She blends play therapy techniques and CBT interventions as appropriate to fit the needs of each individual. She believes that through the guidance of these theories, both therapist and client can work together to help promote a happier and healthier self.
